This is a Rare Tankard from the 17th Century. It was made by the famed Hermann Labrecht between 1646 and 1648 in Hamburg. We refer to this type of tankard as 'parcel gilt'. The Tankard is solid Silver and clearly marked. Cylindrical and on spreading foot, chased with depictions of putto playing in a rustic scene, the hinged cover with cast branch thumbpiece and an applied figural medallion, with leaf-capped scroll handle, marked on base. The Lid and base with scroll detail and cherubs on lid. This Rare Tankard is a sought after piece and very few are known. Only a few similar pieces exist and are at The Metropolitan Museum in New York, The Rosenborg Palace in Copenhagen and owned privately by Prince Jussupow of St Petersburg.
