Fine Parian-ware Figure of Ariadne Reclining Female Nude on the back of a stylised standing Panther, wearing an Acanthus wreath on her head, her left leg tucked beneath her right. Holding drapery in her left hand, on a rectangular base. Mid Nineteenth Century.
This example was probably produced by Minton & Co. for Summerly’s Art Manufactures, and remained in production until mid 1860s. The composition modelled by John Bell (1811-1895) is taken from an original life-size marble example by the German Sculptor Johann Heinrich Dannecker (1758-1841).
Condition: Very good condition. Incised and impressed marks to the underside for date code 1853. Small losses to corners of base at front corners, this is not very noticable due to the allover naturalistic surface base.
