032 Slazenger Croquet Mallet – Corbally – Rare Croquet Mallett – Circa 1910

Rare Slazenger – ‘The Corbally’ Croquet Mallett is called after (most would agree) the most famous Croquet player of all time – Cyril Corbally who was born in Swords in 1880 and died in Newbridge Co. Kildare in 1946.  The famed English Players of the time described Corbally and other Irish Players as  ‘The Terrors’ due to their success, Cyril Corbally won the UK Croquet Championship five times (1902, 1903, 1906, 1908 and 1913), the Men’s Championship once (1926) and the premier selection event, the Champion Cup, now called the President’s Cup, in 1913. Corbally won the Championship of Ireland four times between 1901 and 1911, whilst his brother Herbert won the Championship of Ireland five times between 1913 and 1926. Slazenger (famous sport company) in their 1916 catalogue stated that the ‘Corbally’ had an unparalleled record, The Open Championship, The Champion Cup, The Association Gold Medal, The Eastbourne Gold Cup, all won in the same year. The mallet was specially designed by Mr. Cyril Corbally, the Open Croquet Champion. This mallet was specially designed by Mr. Cyril Corbally, the Open Croquet Champion. The head with brass support bands is made from Lignum Vitae with decorated handle in Hickory. The handle informs us that weight is 3lbs and 8ozs. The Head has hand painted ‘Corbally’ one side and Slazenger Ltd on the back (both a little faded) Overall Condition very Good. This is a rare piece of Irish Sporting History and the perfect possession for the Croquet Fan.
