343 John Schwatschke – ‘Keeping an Eye on the Economy’ Oil on Board – Framed

John Schwatschke (1943-2026) is famed for his work with Classical Portraiture, Comedic commentary and Caricature. This Painting ‘Keeping an Eye on the Economy’ is a rarer example of his work and framed in the original gilt frame. This Painting which we believe was done in the early 2000’s was somewhat prophetic.  Maybe, some of our politicians should have listened to the point made in this painting with the temperature gauge heating up.

Schwatschke was born in Dublin in 1943 of Austrian and Irish parents and his original ambition was to be a classical piano composer. He had always an artistic interest and on the advice of President Eamon De Valera he concentrated on Art. ‘Dev’ is believed to have remarked to Schwatschke “do one thing and do it well” after the artist painted De Valera during his time as Chancellor of the National University.
