This is an English Victorian Japanned Papier Mache desk set (possibly Jennens and Bettridge) which is profusely decorated with Mother of Pearl inlay and elaborate rich polychrome painted floral/scroll decoration. The charming antique features an ebonized double inkwell, retaining the original fitted pair of square crystal cut crystal ink wells with brass hinged lids, resting in two velvet lined bases. The concave pen tray makes for easy writing instrument storage, surrounded and supported by a curvaceous undulating scalloped base. The condition is very good for Pappier Mache with only a few small losses which are not noticable and although there is some crackling , there are no losses. This is a large example of a Papier Mache Desk Set and would make for a very striking addition to any large desk
